Report from the

1st Annual OICD General Meeting,

Doshisha University, Kyoto

October 7-8th 2006

Building Approaches to Conflict Resolution and Prevention

The Organization for Intra-Cultural Development (OICD) encourages the development of research into the mechanisms of identity formation with a view to applying this research to a variety of real world projects aiming to prevent and reduce conflict. This first OICD general meeting follows an academic workshop held in Erlangen, Germany in July 2006 which examined the role of narrative in the process of belonging. The Kyoto meeting focused primarily on how such research can be used to build applied projects which have the potential to diversify or positively channel conflict-causing identities. Contributions will focus on existing projects which utilize media campaigning, role-play, therapy, and other approaches, discussing their effectiveness and development potential. Contributions may also introduce and probe a variety of new ideas for projects, discussing their possible applications and audiences. While anthropological perspectives are central, the OICD is an interdisciplinarygroup and encourages contributions from all relevant disciplines.
